Make Nutrition and Fitness a Priority This Fall

Five Tips for Getting Kids to Eat Healthy Foods

What healthy foods will your child eat? Check out these suggestions, and you might be pleasantly surprised.

  • Be patient. Accepting and eating a wide variety of foods happens over time. Your child might need repeated exposure to a new food – possibly as many as 10-15 failed attempts – before eating it on his own.
  • One new food at a time, please. Don’t overwhelm your child with a variety of new dishes. Always continue to provide other food at the meal that she likes in addition to the “new” food.
  • Set a good example. If you eat a variety of healthy foods, your child will likely do the same. Don’t make an icky face for broccoli or Brussels sprouts, because kids miss nothing.
  • Have your child help prepare the meal. Children who help out in the kitchen and participate in meal preparation tend to be more enthusiastic about eating healthier foods.
  • Savor the flavors of the season. Fall serves up a bountiful harvest of yummy fruits and vegetables that are loaded with nutrients. Kids of all ages can enjoy apples, beets, green beans, squash, and, of course, pumpkins.

 

Five Tips for Fall Fitness

Get the whole family moving, build healthy habits before winter sets in, and create some lasting memories along the way.

  • Don’t miss the seasonal fun! Go to a corn maze. Visit the pumpkin patch. Take the kids apple picking (but take it easy on the donuts). Ride your bikes together. Try geocaching.
  • Walk whenever possible. Walk the kids to school. Walk the dog in the morning. Go for a family walk after dinner. Hit the trails – explore your local park. Bad weather? Hit the mall instead, and take the stairs.
  • Sign up. Get out and play, join a team or try something new. Many classes at gyms and elsewhere start up in the fall. Enroll your children in community sports teams or lessons. Walk the sidelines as they play. Join the local fitness and recreation center.
  • Make TV Time active. Do sit-ups, leg lifts or other exercise while watching TV as a family.
  • Do the chores, burn some calories! Get everyone active and helping with chores, indoors and out. Wash the car. Rake the leaves. Dig into yard work!
